This week I spent some time trying to expand my ideas in my prototype model. While watching cohort 16’s presentations I was inspired with some new ideas and more connections I could make with my driving question. I am trying to expand on what I have in a meaningful way, and not just add more topics for the sake of adding topics. I would like to go deeper with a few areas we learned about rather than doing a lot of surface exploration with many ideas.
The first area I have thought about more is the sensemaking section of my prototype. I went back and went through my blogs and comments from this semester and was reminded about the ideas I had and the connections and main topics I wrote about. One idea that helped me add to my prototype in sensemaking is how in order to understanding something, we have to be able to break it up into manageable pieces. This idea will be supported in my action research by purposefully and logically organizing my lessons with small chunks of information. Taking the metaphor of steps across the learning gap and making each of those steps in logical order and possibly even flipped inside the classroom so that each student can learn at their own pace. Another idea drawn from my sensemaking notes is that the more experiences and observations that someone has, the more accurate their ideas and understandings are. I think I would like to be able to give my students many opportunities to create, listen and give feedback to recordings so it becomes routine in my class that they will have a recording for each unit/concept in math. This may go a long way in helping them understand and become comfortable with the math vocabulary so that when they see words like coefficient and inequality they can confidently proceed with solving the problem. One challenge I am trying to problem solve right now is how I should go about analyzing my data. Last semester, I had one of my classes complete the lesson and the other class period did not participate at all. This is how I compared the two data sets. For this upcoming school year, I would like to incorporate the modified flipped classroom model and the video recordings into my routine from the start, and I want all my students to experience the technology and be able to create their own videos. I am not exactly sure how I will be able to compare “accuracy of solving math problems” when all my students participate.
