Chapter 9 focuses on how to move towards school reform. Below I have outlined the five key elements that Darling Hammond argues and how I see they can change education:
Overall, when I step back from this set of 5 diverse ideas aimed at not just improving the state of public education in our communities, but a complete overhaul of the system, I see that the main effect, the one and most important (as I see it) change would be how students view their education as a priority. If students see their teachers, principals and counselors held to a high standard, receive regular professional development, feel safe, warm and dry with up to date textbooks/curriculum and technology and know that their peers, regardless of teacher or school, have a common goal and objective for their courses and subjects there is a much higher possibility of dedication in their own education. Investing in children, preparing them to be positive contributing members of society lifts everyone up, otherwise we are dooming them to a life that is dependent on those who have been lucky enough to acquire the education everyone deserves.
