The overall outcome after data analysis was that there was no significant difference between my control group and my test group. What I learned from my research is that when students are asked to perform a task that asks them to speak using specific vocabulary there is a variety of levels of student comfort and confidence when recording the steps to solve a problem and the outcome of the study may be affected by the students ability or willingness to participate fully in the designed lesson.
A more rigorous study with additional trials in different math subjects would be suggested for further research. Another level of added scaffolding such as guided notes that more precisely outline the steps to solve the problem may give students who are unsure about their ability a more outlined support so they feel more confident to speak and record, as well as additional lesson that would give students more practice and more experience with the vocabulary and material. Besides taking more time to implement the lesson and vocabulary, an added step that would help to ensure students fully participate is to have a peer listen to the recording and verify that all vocabulary words were used and the recorded problem was solved correctly before submitting to the teacher. These results may indicate that the student learning process would benefit from a change in teaching strategies by having students verbalize and record the steps they took to solve problems, but the level of accuracy after the study showed that there was no difference between the tested group and non tested group. The confident student who fully participated in the study showed an overall increase in accuracy while students who did not participate also showed an increase inaccuracy. The two different teaching strategies, one more traditional with direct instruction and individual work time versus a more innovative approach incorporating technology, recording, and verbalization did not show a significant difference in regards to student accuracy when solving word problems.
