This week I looked through and tried practically all the suggested tools because, while screencastomatic was really simple to use, I wanted one with a few more features that my students could use when they record and make their own videos next school year. A few of the tools looked promising but then turned out to be equipped with too many features so I decided on Screencastify in the end to record my video. What I really like about Screencastify is that it is a Chrome add on so it is easy to get to and will work great for my students to create their own videos since they have Chromebooks.
After reading the articles, I really liked the idea from Jennifer Gonzalez about modifying the flipped classroom, particularly the strategy of them watching a how to (direct instruction) video in class and then practicing what they learned right afterwards in class. Ideally I would try to do a traditional flipped classroom where the students watch at home (and I may still try that) but the problems everyone else has with students not completing the homework is something that is prevalent at my school as well. I think a lot of issues in my classroom will be solved (or at least lessened) with this in class video strategy because it will free me up to put my classroom time effort into redirecting students to be on task, and will enable my students to learn at their own pace and will give them access to the direct instruction even if they are absent.
